Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. She worked as a night nurse so that she could give her mother the time she required in the working day to pursue her passion for the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered that art can be a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom who was a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the famous civil rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma inspired her to make a film about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English and African American Studies. While she was still studying, DuVernay started to become interested in producing in broadcast journalism. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the home by a member jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism duties, and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay began her work working as a junior press assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. She launched in 1999 her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. She also started several lifestyle networks and promotions including her own Urban Beauty Collective.
